Most of what people search for about Bantayan comes down to logistics, so it’s worth being precise. The island lies northwest of mainland Cebu in the Visayan Sea. It’s split into three municipalities: Madridejos covers the northern tip, the municipality of Bantayan covers the center, and Santa Fe sits in the southeast – which is also where nearly all the resorts, beaches and tourist infrastructure are concentrated. The route from Cebu City runs in two legs. First, a bus or private transfer north to Hagnaya Port – budget 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. Second, a ferry across to Santa Fe, roughly an hour. An early morning departure from Cebu makes the difference between arriving with a full afternoon left on the island or losing most of the day to transit.

The beaches, and how they differ

Santa Fe beach is the practical choice – white sand, calm water, and easy walking distance to resorts, restaurants and cafés. If you want convenience without losing the island feel, this is where you base yourself.

Kota Beach is Bantayan’s most photographed spot, known for its sandbar stretching into shallow turquoise water. Good for swimming, good for photos, busier than Santa Fe on a nice day.

Paradise Beach is quieter and more removed from the main tourist strip – the option if Santa Fe and Kota feel too populated for what you came for.

What there actually is to do

Bantayan isn’t built around a checklist of activities, which is part of the point. Renting a bike or scooter to explore the smaller villages and hidden beaches is probably the closest thing to a “must-do.” Island hopping to the nearby islets adds some snorkeling and clearer water if you want a half-day of structure. Sunsets here are genuinely some of the best in the Cebu area. Beyond that, most of what people do on Bantayan is simply not do very much – which, again, is the reason people come.

Practical basics

Santa Fe has the widest range of accommodation – budget guesthouses, mid-range beachfront hotels, and a handful of boutique resorts. Food is straightforward: local Filipino dishes, seafood right off the boat, and enough international options to not feel limited. December to May is the dry season and the better window to visit; June to October brings the heavier rains, though Bantayan is less typhoon-exposed than islands further north or east.

A few things worth knowing before you go: this isn’t a party island, don’t expect fast internet everywhere, and cash is the safer default outside the main resorts.

Bantayan or Malapascua?

Both sit north of Cebu, and both get mentioned in the same breath, but they’re not really the same trip. Bantayan is beaches, calm water and slow island life. Malapascua is smaller and more diving-focused, built around thresher shark encounters rather than beach time. If relaxation is the goal, Bantayan is the more straightforward choice. If diving is the actual reason for the trip, Malapascua wins.

Pairing Bantayan with the rest of Cebu

A common pattern: south Cebu first for waterfalls, canyoning and marine life, then Bantayan afterward to slow down before flying out.
