Siargao is larger, rawer and less predictable. The main hub, General Luna, is a small surf town rather than a beach resort – relaxed cafes, surf schools, local restaurants and a pace that encourages you to slow down rather than pack things in. The beach in front of General Luna is not what people come for. What they come for is the island hopping, the lagoons, the surf and the kind of atmosphere that is genuinely hard to find on more developed islands.
Boracay was closed by the Philippine government in 2018 for a 6-month environmental rehabilitation. It reopened cleaner and better regulated – but also more commercial and more tightly controlled than before.
Siargao won Best Island in the World from Conde Nast Traveler in 2019. That recognition brought more tourists, but the island still feels significantly less developed than Boracay.

A great beach is your main priority. White Beach is genuinely extraordinary – calm water, powdery white sand, a long stretch that changes character from quiet at Station 1 to social at Station 2 to budget-friendly at Station 3. If the beach is the point of your trip, Boracay delivers better than almost anywhere in the Philippines.
You want convenience. Everything on Boracay is easy. Tours, restaurants, transfers – it is all organized and accessible without much planning. For travelers who do not want logistics to be part of the trip, this matters.
You want nightlife and social energy. Boracay has a genuinely good bar and restaurant scene along White Beach. Sunsets at Station 2 with a drink in hand, fire dancers on the sand – it is a classic tropical beach holiday done well.
You are traveling with people who have different interests. Boracay’s variety of water sports, beach options and town activities makes it a good destination for groups where not everyone wants the same kind of trip.
Go to Siargao if
Surfing is a priority. Cloud 9 is one of the best surf breaks in Asia – a hollow, powerful right-hander over a shallow reef that has been attracting international surfers for decades. Beyond Cloud 9, the island has spots for all levels. If you surf or want to learn, Siargao is the right choice.
You want extraordinary island hopping. The Tri-Island tour to Naked Island, Daku and Guyam is one of the best single-day boat trips in the Philippines. The Sohoton Cove tour – two hours by bangka to a protected cove with limestone caves and a lagoon full of stingless jellyfish – is genuinely extraordinary. Boracay’s island hopping options are decent but not in the same category.
You prefer a slower, less commercial atmosphere. General Luna has a genuinely unhurried energy. Days tend to organize themselves around waves, coffee, sunsets and a good meal rather than scheduled activities. If that sounds appealing, Siargao will suit you well.
You are not particularly interested in beaches. This sounds counterintuitive for a Philippines island, but Siargao’s main attractions are not its town beach. The island hopping sandbars, the lagoons and the surf are the draw. Travelers who come expecting Boracay-style beach conditions sometimes leave disappointed.
Budget matters. Siargao is generally more affordable than Boracay. Accommodation, food and tours are all slightly cheaper on average.

Boracay: White Beach can get very crowded in peak season – December to April and particularly Holy Week. The beach at its busiest looks nothing like the photos. Station 1 is significantly quieter than Station 2 and worth the slight extra cost if crowds bother you.
Siargao: If you are not a surfer, the island is still excellent – but you need to manage your expectations about the beach in General Luna. It is pleasant but not the headline act. The island hopping is the headline act. If you go knowing that, you will love it.

Boracay requires a flight to Caticlan (the closest airport, around 1 hour from Manila) or Kalibo (cheaper but a 2-hour road transfer), followed by a 15-minute ferry to the island. The connection is well-practiced and not complicated.
Siargao has direct flights into Sayak Airport from Manila and Cebu. Schedules vary by season – book early, particularly in December and January. From the airport it is around 30 to 45 minutes to General Luna.
Both are accessible. Boracay has more flight options from Manila. Siargao requires a bit more advance planning.
